LYRICS
"Naita tte iin da yo" kimi ga fui ni sou itte kureta kara
Nandaka ureshikute namida janaku egao ga koboreta
Bukiyou sugiru kotoba de kimi wo kizutsukete shimatta
Sore demo hanaretari shinaide
Ima mo koushite sasae ni natte kureterunda kitto ...
You suddenly said, "You can cry if you want"
Somehow it made me happy, instead of tears I smiled
My words so clumsy, they hurt you
But I don't want you to leave me,
I want you to stay beside me always

Kanaetai negai kanaetai yume todoketai omoi subete
Shinji tsuzukeru koto ga kiseki wo yonde
Mirai ni tsunagatte yuku yo
Zutto nee zutto mimamotteite hoshii
Wishes and dreams I want to come true the feelings I wish I could tell you
A miracle created from the things I've always believed
Is connected to the future
Always, always I want you to watch over me

Dear My Friend
"Kimi nara daijoubu da yo" wakare kiwa ni sou itte kureta kara
Kanjiteta kodoku ga sono hito koto de kirei ni naku natta
Atarashii tobira wo hiraku
Sore wa dare demo kowakute fuan darake dakedo
Senaka wo oshite kureta kimi wo
Omoidaseba chikara ga afurete kuru kara ne
You said, on leaving "You'll be able to do it"
The loneliness I felt was wiped clean with those words
I'm opening a new door, anyone would be frightened
All I had to do was remember you
and the strength flowed through me

Sunao na kimochi yuzurenai mono shoujiki na kotoba subete
Koe ni shite tsutaeru koto ga dekita nara
Mirai wa hirogatte yuku yo
Itsumo sou itsumo kokoro ni kimi ga iru kara
I won't give up my feelings
If I can make voice to all these words
Then the future will open up wide
Because forever you are in my heart

Dear My Friend
Tachi tomatte mo wasuresou ni natte mo
Nando mo nando demo mae wo muite yuku to chikau yo
Miageta sora hikari ga sashikondeiru
Kimi ni mata aeru hi made
I vow that no matter if I stop, or if I forget
I will keep moving forward
Light is shining down, when I look up at the sky
Until the day when I can see you again

Sunao na kimochi yuzurenai mono shoujiki na kotoba subete
Koe ni shite tsutaeru koto ga dekita nara
Mirai wa hirogatte yuku yo
Negai kanaetai yume todoketai omoi subete
Shinji tsuzukeru koto ga kiseki wo yonde
Mirai ni tsunagatte yuku yo
Zutto zutto mimamotteite hoshii
I won't give up my feelings
If I can make voice to all these words
Then the future will open up wide
Wishes, the dreams I want to come true the feelings I wish I could tell you
A miracle created from the things I've always believed
Is connected to the future
Always, always I want you to watch over me

Dear My Friend...

LYRICS
Tatoeba anata ga ima koko ni ita toshitara nani wo tsutaeru deshou?
Kotoba mo nai mama kitto sono mune ni hoho yose namida kobosu dake ne
Mou ichido dakiaetara nidoto hanarenuyou
Tsuyoku musubi au no sore ga kibou no hikari kitto...
Even if now you're here, what could I tell you?
I'm sure I would be speechless, and tears would just flowed as I hug you tight
If I could embrace you once again, I wouldn't let you go for the second time
Our connection would be stronger, and that would be my light of hope, I'm sure...

Ai yo douka tsureteitte yakusoku no basho e
Tsunagi aeta omoi wa eien dakara
Ai wo yonde kono ude ni dakishimeaeru nara
Donna mirai mo osorenai de mukae ni yukeru
Hitomi wo mitsume kotaeyou anata no soba ni iru...
Hey love, how will you take me to the promised place
Cause when we're connected, this feeling is eternal
I call for love, as if I can hold it with my arms
No matter how frightening the future can be, I'll continue moving forward
When I'm able to see your eyes again, I'll tell you that I'm right beside you...

Shizuka ni kokoro ga itta watashi wa koko ni ite anata wo aishiteru
Hanareteitatte zutto kawaranu kono omoi anata ni todokeyou
Mou nani mo kowakunai yo donna kurayami demo
Terasu kono hikari wa itsuka anata no moto e kitto...
Silently, I said to myself in my heart, that I'll be here and am loving you
Even if we're separated, forever this feeling will never change, and I'll convey it to you
I'm not afraid of anything else, no matter what darkness
The light is shining upon me, someday I'll be with you, I'm sure

Ai yo douka tsureteitte yakusoku no basho e
Soko e yuku yo chikai wa eien dakara
Ai wo yonde kono ude ni dakishimeaeru nara
Donna itami mo koete miseru hohoemi nagara
Hikari wa nidoto nakusanai kanarazu soko e yuku
Hey love, how will you take me to the promised place
Let's go there, cause this oath is eternal
I call for love, as if I can hold it with my arms
No matter what pain I need to cross, I'll always face it with a smile
I won't lose that light for the second time, I'll definitely go there

Toki ga subete wo iyasu sore wo tada matsu yori
Ima wa arukidasou kaze ga yubisasu basho de
Ashita ga matteru kitto
Time heals everything, waiting is all it takes
Right now I'm walking, to the place where the wind points
I'll look forward for tomorrow, definitely

Ai yo douka tsureteitte yakusoku no basho e
Tada, unazugi dakishimeaeru sono hi e
Hey love, how will you take me to the promised place
With just a nod, I'll embrace that day

Ai yo douka tsureteitte yakusoku no basho e
Tsunagi aeta omoi wa eien dakara
Ai wo yonde kono mune ni dakishimeaeru nara
Donna mirai mo osorenai de mukae ni yukeru
Hitomi wo mitsume kotaeyou anata no soba ni iru
Hey love, how will you take me to the promised place
Cause when we're connected, this feeling is eternal
I call for love, as if I can hold it in my heart
No matter how frightening the future can be, I'll continue moving forward
When I'm able to see your eyes again, I'll tell you that I'm right beside you...

NOTE: Song lyrics and translation for the 1st song can be found on the Final Fantasy Wiki. Eventhough the lyrics for the 2nd song can also be found in the same Wiki, I did the transliteration and translation myself. You can found lyrics for Charice's English version on that Wiki though.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS

Music has been a viral part of the Final Fantasy franchise. Whether a game or other medias, the music has always been one of the highlights, as well as the power of this RPG series. The theme songs had surpassed time, and became valuable memories that touched many listeners: gamers, and even those who didn't play the games. They managed to capture the sentimental values and the heart-touching emotions of one or more lead characters of the title. Final Fantasy has had numbers of powerful ballads, that generally speaks and conveys the same typical themes: Goodbyes, Broken Loves, Platonic Loves, Separations. Well, they aren't exactly fun songs, but they truly were wonderful pieces, and an implicit spoilers to the story. Perhaps people enjoy to cry better than to laugh or smile? I don't know hahaha... but they do showed that even games have hearts!
Last year, precisely in October 2010... I was trusted with an important responsibility to arrange a farewell event for the graduating students. The event was held 1-2 weeks prior their graduation ceremony, and among the graduates are my precious students, whom I had tutored for years. More than that, one of my best friend, a precious 'dear brother' of mine was among the list. Therefore, it was truly more than just an important assignment for me, since I already had mixed feelings and uncertain emotions from day one of preparation. It's not that the event was new, cause it was always held annually before that (and I always participated). However, these small thoughts of those precious people of my life, made the event became very very personal for me...

...過去の記憶...
...MEMORIES OF THE PAST...
A colleague, who was in charge as show manager, proposed an idea when we wanted to do things differently. Especially because it was said to be the final event to be held by the Faculty (well, the folks at the Univ couldn't kept their own words, cause it WASN'T the last event after all... BAH!). We were tired of the old concept of the event, where the guests (the graduates-to-be) opted out from participating because they didn't think it was special. The show manager wanted to do a tribute, with songs and all. Of course, all the committee was THRILLED and couldn't agree more! He then joked, telling that I should sang a SOLO for the students. After several hahahaha, laughing here and there, the thought struck me, and immediately I said, "YES, I'LL DO IT!". I never actually performed my vocal hobby in front of public, especially on my workplace... so it was not just a challenge, it was a first time heart pumpin experience, and my students had always thought that if I sang, it would mean the end of the world HAHAHAHA. I just had to do it though. For my friends, for my precious friends... for a SPECIAL BROTHER!
I immediately thought of the first song "KIMI GA IRU KARA" upon my way back home that time. The song was freshly released at the time, and it came from the latest title of the franchise, the Final Fantasy XIII. This song created mixed reaction by fans of the series, because it was 'breaking the barrier' by introducing a new 'inexperienced' artist whereas the previous titles were delivered by top-notch artist that had long spanned journey in their music. The song also sounded 'different' compared to the previous ballad, it was more POP sounding... and to be honest, I didn't quite enjoy it upon several first listens. However, the power of this song (fans would still argue me on this, go ahead it's okay haha), is the very fitting lyrics. It didn't break the theme, rather turning it into a more hopeful sentimental message... and for once, this number didn't explicitly speaking about love, but about friendship. A very very PERFECT piece for that event right now?
I never played the games, but I know that they all have a somewhat sad ending. Yup, I don't mind reading spoiler about this one haha. How about Final Fantasy XIII? My younger brother played (or used to play?) this game on our XBOX 360, and well, it has always been a lullaby movie for me. Watching the game put me to sleep (in a good way). The story? You can read it on the Wiki. However the main plot resolved the main heroine Lightning who wanted to save her sister Serah Farron who was turned into a Crystalized L'Cie. On the journey, she met Sazh Katzroy whose only son was turned into one as well. She also met Serrah's fiance, whom she hated, the charming good looking badass as well as an asshole Snow Villiers (hey, fans hated this guy... but he's my favorite FF character so far! Can't argue with a manly figure that I always wanted to be and looked like right? XD) who wanted to the same. They also ran into the whiny Hope Estheim who wanted to kill Snow to avenge his mother's dead (I hated this boy, eventhough he ended up being HOPEful, yeah and fans LOVED him Y_Y), as well as Oerba Dia Vanille, a mysterious young cheerful girl who was also the narrator of the game. The team met Oerba Yun Fang who then opened the truth about L'Cie and all, and the facts about her and Vanille..
A long story? Yes... read the rest on Wiki. I still couldn't get used to the jargons of the show anyways. However, I knew what happened in the end. Vanille and Fang sacrificed themselves to protects their worlds, and making it a better place for their friends. How did it relate to the theme song? From the first time I heard it, this song spoke about farewell, about having someone precious lost. However, thinking of that person, made you feel stronger, cause someday you'll meet that person again. You'll be able to meet that FRIEND again! This is why I wasn't surprised at all upon discovering the ending story, it was explicitly told in the song. This song also reflected the hope of Lightning and Snow to find Serrah. As well as Sazsh to his son, and Hope about his mother.
What I love about this song, is how it doesn't speak about love between lovers (it works for Serrah and cool-guy Snow). It speaks about love in universal way, in friendship. That part is the winner for me, and I performed it live as my farewell song for my students and best friend, as well as to my colleagues - since I was planning on resigning that (full of memories) place afterward. I stayed longer in that Faculty for the sake of my best friend, and so when he graduated, it means that I do as well. I couldn't describe how the performance once, I wish I had it taped or something. My best friend told me I had a shaky start, well of course stupid boy! Knowing that it was a farewell song for you, almost made my cry... DOH! Overall the audience didn't even realized it was me who was singing, and they thought I was lip-sync-ing hahahaha. My mission was accomplished, my students and colleagues 'received' my message and well, with several other songs performed by the other cast, the event ended with everyone singing together, lots and LOTS of tears falling everywhere, and tge event had became a VERY PRECIOUS MEMORIES of my, and also the other's past...
......  *paused to wipe tears away*
On to the next song! Hahaha
The 2nd song is the newly released theme song for the sequel: Final Fantasy XIII-2. In this sequel, the story was turned upside down. Instead of Lightning, the heroine is now Serrah. Maybe because in the first, Serrah only appeared in flashbacks and ending, that developers wanted her to jump into action? I don't know. However I'm one among those who actually didn't like the concept. Since well, it destroyed the happy end of the first game. As far as we know, everyone went happily ever after in the prequel (which a bit rare in FF games), with Serrah re-uniting with hunky Snow and kickass sister Lightning. I LOVE that ending...
However, things turned into different space, where Lightning then vanished away. Everyone believed that she was 'lost' when Vanille and Fang turned into crystals Ragnarok, but not Serrah. So, Serrah's quest to find her sister is now the main storyline of this game. Snow (who looks weird now, I prefer his first game looks T.T) went to find Lightning because he believed in Serrah. Serrah eventually met a young man Noel Kreiss, who turned out to be a time traveler from the future. He came in order to change his fate, as he said he's the last of mankind on that time. Apparently Lightning went to Valhalla to protect the future, and to change the fate of everyone especially her sister. With the help of Noel, Serrah traveled through the Historia Crux to find Lightning, seeking her answers concerning the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology, and hopefully create a better future for them all...

...未来の覚悟...
...RESOLUTION OF THE FUTURE...

I couldn't say much about this game, since it will be released 2 days from now in Japan, and even the end of next month internationally. I'll be getting one though, simply for the sake of Snow hahahaha, eventhough I still prefer his older looks. Kinda curious what will happen to him, especially with fiance Serrah going on a journey with a younger man *cough cough*. I hope he won't be treated badly though, since well... lots of fans wanted to kill the blue eyed guy so much.
On to the song... Hmmmmm. What can I say about this song? Hmmmmmm....
I appreciated as well as quite disappointed with this new song. For me personally, it was kind of a let down after Sayuri's one. I don't dislike Mai Fukui or all, and she's a great singer -Newbie as well, but she does have the quality to be big. What I don't enjoy of this song, is how 'LAZY' it sounds. I don't know how to describe it, but I think yes, 'LAZY' is the better term I can use. It never actually managed to lift my emotion up, and even the POP-sound of "Kimi ga Iru Kara", has it climax that made me teary and heart pumping. This song? Hmmm.... it's kinda of bland (the music, the lyrics) for me, uninspiring for me, and it never reach climax, which I think is an important part for a song. I can feel this, based on a particular fact: I NEVER had trouble singing this song, and even felt there's somepart who is out of note? If a very un-experiened amateur singer like felt like that, then it means...?
Even Sayuri's song managed to make my heart racing and I need to go all out during the verse and all. And you know what? The song writer Masashi Hamauzu even said that he expected more to Sayuri's arrangement. I kinda expected the new song to surpass, or at least the same par with "Kimi ga Iru Kara", the result is quite disappointing. Even Charice's international version didn't manage to captive my attention as much either. I'm certain the lyrics played an important role in this, cause I find "Yakusoku no Basho" should've been better with the lyrics. Eventhough the musical sound is a tad better than "Kimi ga Iru Kara", the lyrics is way below the standard. What happened to those awesome ballad lyrics and made you teary and all? "Kimi ga Iru Kara" kept the tradition, but somehow the new song failed me on that. The lyrics kinda cheesy lovey dovey thingy that I didn't appreciate much. It COULD've been better... yes, lyric-wise, music and arrangements... and I think Mai Fukui can even sing better XD
The song is speaking about something to expect in the future. A future when will be reunited with beloved person, while keeping the feeling in the present time. "Let's go to that promised place, where I finally able to meet you again", That's how it says. I assumed this is speaking about Serrah with her feelings towards Lightning (and Snow? I hope so... poor guy Y_Y). It might be speaking about Noel and his 'mysterious' reason as well. I kinda had this prediction that he's Serrah and Snow descendant... or Lightning's? Surprise me oh Final Fantasy! I need to play the game to know it.
My only trouble in recording the 2nd song, is the new headset and microphone I just (or FINALLY) bought. It's a sensitive one, so you might expect additional noise (breathing and all hahaha). The good side, it's much clearer and I finally had a better quality after all these years XD. Kinda hard to mix with the music as well, so you might want to lower the volume a bit on this one, cause somehow it sounds better like that. I definitely need to get used to this new headset and all, especially for my BIG PROJECT for Xmas hehehe.
Overall, both of these songs represent two sub theme. The first one played an important memories of my past, and the lyrics is speaking about the future. The second one is the song resolving a goal for the future, while it represents the present state and emotion as well. The COMBO of this song, is a complete combination of all three sub themes. This will also be my last COMBO Selections for the year. I really enjoyed doing both! The 1st song made me racing through my emotions to struggle with my lost (which, had sort of became a true reality, since I haven't heard any news from my students and my best friend for a while now) and will always have a heart in my memories. It even triggered me to keep on singing to the world. One of my student said that she prefered my version compared to the original, and with that I'm really glad that it met its goal. The 2nd song, eventhough I still think it can be a lot better, I do enjoy it, and practically enjoyed my own version MUUUCCCH better than the original... o_O (THIS is another reason that really showed for me, the quality of the original Y_Y). Oh, and before you ask... NO, I won't be doing the English version of the 2nd song, cause the lyrics aren't inspiring enough.
The 2nd song are just one among my Final Fantasy covers. Please take your time to listen the others as well, as they are all (including the new song) available on this playlist:
A quick info, the song "Melodies of Life" was also dedicated to my best friend (the same one I dedicate "Kimi ga Iru Kara" to, who lost his grandmother less than 2 months after that graduation).
Thanks for listening and please don't hesitate if you have any suggestion, request and all. I'd be gladly to response with a huge SMILE.... \(^u^)/. I hope you enjoy both songs, have a nice day, God Bless!!
